Johanna M. Seddon, M.D., ScM is a retina specialist, genetic epidemiologist and founding director of the Macular Degeneration Center of Excellence in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Seddon is a renowned clinician-scientist and practicing ophthalmologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of patients with macular degeneration and other macular disorders. She has published over 250 peer-reviewed original scientific articles, book chapters and reviews and has received awards from several organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Fight for Sight, Research to Prevent Blindness and the European Retina, Macular and Vitreous Society.

Her pioneering research has identified nutritional and lifestyle factors associated with macular degeneration, and her team discovered novel common and rare genetic variants and other biomarkers that impact the onset and progression of this disease.
